The Roosevelt Corollary (2)

Roosevelt Corollary2This cartoon is also about the Roosevelt Corollary. Since the Roosevelt Corollary allowed the US to police the Western hemisphere and keep European nations out. This political cartoon depicts Uncle Sam guarding the Western Hemisphere, or in this case the other side of a river, while European nations stand on the other side. The cartoonist’s message on this is that we didn’t really have the right to do this, we weren’t the rulers of the world. However another opinion that could be had about this is that the US made the right decision to claim their territory early so they could establish themselves.

A technique that the cartoonist used on this cartoon is symbolism, because Uncle Sam is sort of a symbol of our country. He stands holding a gun in front of other symbolic people that represent countries in Latin America. On the other side of the river are people symbolizing European nations. Another technique that the cartoonist used was labeling. The sign above the river that Uncle Sam is guarding says NO TRESPASSING. This generally supports the idea that the US is policing the western hemisphere and guarding against European nations, otherwise I would not know what was going on. This cartoon supports anti-imperialism, because the US should not have been allowed to make that policy of no European nations coming in to the Western Hemisphere. This action we took was a clear representative of imperialism.
